MARTIN TARAS has 25 plus years in corporate headquarter calls in the Philadelphia, Central and NE PA Markets. He spent many years as an account manager for Sara Lee Foods being responsible for business development, category reviews, strategic plans and budget. He began his career as a meat cutter providing him with a first hand understanding of the meat business from the ground up. Martin's strong proven track record with developing and maintaining relationships with associates and customers after several years in the food broker community has given him a solid reputation in the grocery and meat industry.

Debbie Hartin comes to Superior with many years of merchandising experience mostly in the pharmaceutical industry. She has transitioned seamlessly into the food business and has become a welcome addition to the merchandising team. Her strong people person skills allow her to connect easily with most meat managers. 

BRANDY MCCOLLUM joined Superior Food Brokerage team in October 2018. She has held various positions in the grocery industry including roles in dairy, frozen, deli, dsd receiving manager, grocery manager and assistant manager. Brandy brings a great deal of grocery/retail knowledge to the team and prides herself on building relationships with store management to ensure the product Superior represents are given appropriate attention.

​They are valuable members of the Superior Food Brokerage team. They assist in resets and demo's as well as store grand openings.

Emily Alkhatib is one of the most recent additions to the Superior Food Merchandising team. Before landing in the Maryland area, she was a front end supervisor for PriceRite Supermarkets in Seekonk, MA. The last two years Emily worked for W-Retail Summit Services Unlimited in a merchandising capacity.

Chris Sommo joined Superior Food Brokerage as a merchandiser in the NY/NJ/CT areas handling Stop +  Shop stores. For nine years prior to coming to Superior he was employed at Imperial Distributors  as a sales merchandiser working in one of Stop + Shop’s busiest stores. He serviced Stop + Shops as well as other chains in the NY/CT areas for Retail Service Associates for 10 years prior to working for Imperial Distributors. 

​​​​TERESA SCHMIDT has been a Marketing Promotions Specialist with Superior Food Brokerage since the spring of 2012. Some years ago she took a job with Gwaltney Packing Company in the Sales Accounting & Marketing Departments and later assisted in the merger of Gwaltney and Smithfield Companies and the transition from the Oracle accounting system to SAP Vistex. As one of the key persons, she tested the programs prior to live date, the updates afterward and trained new users. Known for her commitment to excellence, she received Smithfield’s President’s Award for outstanding achievement in 2011. Because of her knowledge of promotions, marketing accruals & accounting skills, her opinion is sought after and her judgements are respected and trusted throughout the nation.

MIKE SHUCK is a graduate of Towson University with a degree in business management. His extensive career has been in retail and food service sales in the Baltimore/Washington market. He has worked for Smithfield/Esskay, Crossmark, Advantage Sales and Marketing as well Armour Food Company. He also has product line management experience from his many years in the broker business. Mike is currently handling headquarter calls with the Baltimore/Washington Independent groups.

JEFF THOMAS runs all information systems that are used internally and externally by all Superior Employees. He holds degrees in Business Administration with a concentration in Information Systems, Accounting and HR Management. In addition to employee management, he works Safeway East Logistics for our vendors.  

RON PENNINGTON holds a position of Vice President with Superior Food Brokerage and brings extensive retail background experience. He worked for Safeway stores for several years beginning as an apprentice meat cutter and moving through the ranks as Meat Manager, Merchandiser, QA Manager, Processed and Fresh Meat Buyer, Category and Sales Manager. Ron’s passion is Safeway and is responsible for all of Superior Food Brokerage’s lines and sales sold to Safeway. 

​​  Ashley Moore  accepted a position as a vendor merchandiser with Superior Food Brokerage. She will be working both individually and as part of a team to ensure the quality and freshness of all products, keep multiple locations up to date with the latest planograms and provide excellent customer service. Previously Ashley worked as a vendor merchandiser for several other companies providing herself with the experience and skills necessary to excel in her current position. 

MIKE LANAHAN holds the title of Vice President with Superior Food Brokerage. He is a graduate of the University of Baltimore. He has many years of meat experience including time with Smithfield Packing Company. Mike is account executive for Super Valu (Virginia, Pennsylvania and Baltimore)

BRIAN THOMAS graduated from Coastal Carolina University in 2006 with a degree in business management. Following graduation he worked in secondary finance for 3 years in South Carolina before returning home to Maryland. Brian spent 4 years working as a Merchandiser at Superior Food Brokerage gaining a wealth of retail store level experience and knowledge. He transitioned into the office working under the tutelage of Ed Gordon, a training experience that Brian found invaluable. He holds the position of Account Executive handling Giant Landover, Giant Carlisle and Stop + Shop Among his keys to succeeding in this industry are asking the “right” questions, attention to detail and honesty.

NANCY HAWSE started her retail career as a cashier for both Giant Md., and KMART. She transitioned into accounting working in a tax office before doing book keeping for multiple businesses. Nancy came back into retail working 10 years on a Giant Pa., reset team before landing a job with Superior Food Brokerage as a merchandiser.

CRYSTAL TROUTbegan her retail grocery career working for Weis Markets as an HBC lead a position she held for 6 years. She and her husband then owned and operated their own butcher shop for 7 years before moving from Shippensburg, Pa., to York, Pa., to be closer to family. She then took a position on a renew team before taking a full time merchandising position with Superior Food Brokerage.

DAN RITCHEYbegan work in the food industry with Bob Evans Farms in 2003 after graduating from Old Dominion University. He came to Superior Food Brokerage in June of 2005 when Bob Evans began direct shipments into SuperValu in Mechanicsville, Va. Dan has worked with the independent customers and most recently became Account Manager for Farm Fresh Supermarkets in the Hampton Road, Va., area. He strives for customer satisfaction and provides a strong liaison between Supervalu and their retail community.

DAVE THOMAS joined Superior Food Brokerage in 1986. The company was founded by his father, Jay Thomas in 1972.
Dave spent ten years as a Regional Sales Manager for Smithfield Packing Company and became President of Superior in 1993 after his father retired. Under Dave’s leadership, the company which now includes his two sons has grown to employing over 25 people. Superior Food Brokerage covers the Mid-Atlantic region from Massachusetts to Virginia. Dave is proud of the fact that he has employees who are dedicated to providing the best sales and service for our manufacturers.

Shannon Armbruster  joined The merchandising team in March of 2018. Since then, she has been able to build relationships with store management to ensure Superior Food products are properly represented. Prior to coming to Superior, Shannon had many roles such as, teacher, photographer, sales lead, shipping specialist and marketing supervisor.

HARRY CAHILLis a graduate of Ursinus College. He worked his way through school at Gino's fast food restaurant as an hourly employee and continued with Gino's for the next 8 years in management. He became a Route Salesman for Bob Evans Farms even winning Salesman of the Year in 2005. He joined Superior Food Brokerage in 2008 as a Merchandiser when Bob Evans dropped direct store sales.  His territory has included the Philadelphia, Allentown and Scranton markets and is proud of the many contacts he has made and continues to make. Harry considers the Superior Food Brokerage auditing system the best in this ever evolving business.

BILL HOOPER came to Superior Food Brokerage as a Director of Merchandising in 2002.  He began as a meat cutter in a small mom and pop grocery store where he worked until graduating from Towson University with a B.S. degree in Mass Communications. He spent years as a meat manager for 2 local chains before becoming a Regional Sales Merchandiser for Smithfield Packing Company. Bill brings dedication, drive and passion to his position making him a valuable asset to the future and success of Superior Food Brokerage.

 Rhonda Frenze joined Superior Food Brokerage in May of 2018 as a merchandiser handling all Stop & Shop Supermarkets in MA and RI. She has held various positions in the grocery industry for 15 years including cashier, POS backup, customer service rep, floral assistant, merchandiser, night crew as well as route delivery. With a desire to give excellent customer service and a strong attention to detail, she also grew her own small business from 2 accounts to 45 within 2 years. She brings enthusiasm, self-motivation and dedication to Superior Food Brokerage
